When I arrived home, the sun was setting, and I felt like I was coming undone at the seams. My best friend was leaving. And I didn’t know who I could call and talk to about it—Jess was the person I always called when anything happened in my life.

I picked up the phone and dialed Bas’s number without thinking too hard about it.

“Hey, beautiful,” he said when he answered. I could hear the smile in his voice.

“Hi.” I swallowed hard, trying not to cry.

“Everything okay?” he asked.

I let out a shaky breath. “My sister is leaving, and I . . .” I took a deep breath when my voice threatened to crack. “I’m just freaking out. I’ve lost so much in my life, and if I lose her now, I don’t know . . .” My throat closed, and I couldn’t talk anymore.

“I’m sorry,” Bas said. “I know how close I am to my brothers, and if any of them had to go, it would be devastating. Will she be far?”

“Yeah,” I said dully. “Too far for us to go out for wine every Wednesday and laugh about guys or hike after dates to gossip.” I only realized what I’d said after I’d said it, and Bas laughed.

“You can hike with me after one of our dates, and tell me all about it. I’d love to hear what you would say about me.”

I grinned despite feeling the world was falling apart.

“Well, obviously, I would start by telling everything about your looks, what you chose to wear, and whether you were a gentleman or not.”

“Yeah?”

“It’s a big deal,” I said. “A guy needs to have respect.”

“And get the check.”

I giggled, already feeling a bit better.

“Sure, otherwise it’s not a date.”

“Can’t have that. What’s next?”

“How good a kisser you are comes next because it’s either the cherry on top or the deal breaker.”

Bas laughed outright. “I can understand that. We have that too, but I think our standards are lower. We’re just happy not to be slapped in the face once we go in for the kill.”

“Oh, God, you did not just say that.”

“What?”

“Going in for the kill. Dating in your world is so aggressive.”

“What are you talking about?” He sounded adequately confused.

“Hunting season, going in for the kill . . .”

He groaned. “The worst thing about the press following me around is that everything I say—especially the dumb shit—is immortalized. Once it’s out there, there’s no going back.”

I giggled. “I can’t imagine what that must be like.”

“Trust me, it’s not a party.”

My giggles faded into a smile.

“I want to take you out on my yacht this weekend,” Bas said.

“No—”

“No?”

I laughed. “We can go out another time. This weekend, I’m arranging it all.”

“Really?”

“If that’s okay,” I added. I didn’t want to push him into my world, but what Jess had said stuck with me—what if he passed the test?

“That sounds cool,” Bas said. “What are we doing?”

“It’s a . . . surprise.” What if I told him now and he ran in the other direction?

“I can’t wait,” he said.
